2-3 year olds Room

Welcome to our 2–3‑year‑old room, a warm and nurturing space where every child is valued, supported, and encouraged to grow with confidence. Our environment is shaped by continuous provision, offering familiar, thoughtfully arranged resources that children can return to as they explore and learn at their own pace. Inspired by the Curiosity Approach, the room is filled with natural materials, authentic objects, and calming, homely touches that spark wonder and invite meaningful discovery. Our practitioners tune in closely to each child, using in‑the‑moment planning to extend learning as it unfolds—following children’s interests, celebrating their ideas, and creating rich, responsive experiences that help them flourish.

We take children from 2 years until they are 3 in this room. In this room the children can continue to nap after lunch if you wish. We use the secure online software ‘Tapestry’ to share your children’s daily care diaries, observations and next steps and to pass on any messages from your child’s key person. We work on a ratio of 1 adult to 5 children under 3 years old.

About the Room

Small world and Construction Area

This area encourages children to dive into imaginative play by creating their own small worlds using a variety of small‑world resources and construction materials. Here, they can build landscapes, design structures, and bring their ideas to life through storytelling and role play. As they experiment with different materials, children develop problem‑solving skills, spatial awareness, and creativity, all while exploring the joy of making their own miniature worlds.

Creative Area

This area is thoughtfully equipped with a variety of mark‑making materials that inspire both fine motor development and creative exploration. Here, children are free to experiment with colour, texture, and movement, engaging all their senses as they discover what happens when they make marks in different ways. It’s a space that encourages curiosity and problem‑solving, inviting children to work out how tools behave, how materials respond, and what their own actions can create. Through this open‑ended exploration, they build confidence, express themselves, and develop the early foundations of writing in a joyful, hands‑on way.

Role Play Area

This area is designed to spark imaginative play while supporting children’s physical development. Equipped with natural and real‑life items, it invites children to step into meaningful role‑play experiences—whether they’re caring for a baby, cooking a meal, or creating their own little world. Through this type of play, children build confidence, develop social skills, and strengthen coordination as they move, lift, carry, and explore. It’s a space where imagination takes the lead and everyday objects become the starting point for rich, purposeful learning.

Walk in Sand Area

Our walk‑in sand pit offers a rich, sensory space designed to encourage exploratory play and support physical development. Filled with natural resources and small‑world items, it invites children to dig, pour, build, and imagine as they move through the sand with confidence and curiosity. This open‑ended environment allows little ones to experiment with cause and effect, develop coordination, and create their own stories through play. It’s a place where hands, feet, and imaginations can roam freely, turning simple materials into endless possibilities.

Relaxation & Book Area

Sometimes what our children need most is a calm, comforting space where they can rest, reset, and feel completely at ease—and that’s exactly what this area provides. Here, children are invited to snuggle up with an adult to share a story or choose a book to explore independently. Soft cushions, warm blankets, and familiar cuddly toys create a cozy, secure atmosphere where they can unwind. We believe that easy access to books is essential for every child; it nurtures language development, sparks imagination, supports problem‑solving, and strengthens personal, social, and emotional growth. This quiet corner is a gentle reminder that learning happens not only in busy moments of play, but also in the peaceful pauses in between.

Water Tray Area

From tipping and pouring to filling and emptying, this water area is always a favourite with our two‑year‑olds. It offers endless opportunities for children to explore the properties of water and observe the fascinating changes that happen when they drop objects in, stir the surface, or move their fingers through it. As they play, children experiment with cause and effect, develop early scientific thinking, and strengthen their fine and gross motor skills. It’s a space full of discovery, where simple actions lead to big learning moments.

Meet the Staff

Staff

Our 2‑year‑old room staff are trained to a high standard and place your child’s wellbeing and development at the heart of everything they do. Emma, our room leader, works closely with her dedicated team to provide a holistic, nurturing approach that supports every aspect of your child’s growth. Through our key person system, each child is paired with a member of staff who takes the lead on their development journal on Tapestry and maintains strong, meaningful communication with home. This ensures that every family feels connected, informed, and confident that their child is receiving personalised care and attention each day.

To make drop off and pick ups easier, on your settling visits please bring:

  • A change of clothes for any accidents and a puddle suit.
  • Slippers or Crocs (the nursery is a no-shoe area for health and safety reasons).
